Smoking aid – lighting and holding

The challenge

Smoking aid - lighting and holdingA care home requested smoking aids for two motor neurone disease patients to obviate the need for someone to be in attendance all the time to light and hold the cigarettes.

A device was made consisting of an aluminium ash tray fitted with a handle and fixed to a large stabilising disc. The ash tray has a springloaded cigarette holder which, when depressed, ejects the butt. The smoke passes via a small drainage chamber, and solid and flexible tubes, to a standard holder mouth-piece.

Supervision of patients when they are smoking is now minimised, making it possible for them to do so much more easily.
