Sewing machine control

The challenge

Sewing machine controlA keen seamstress with no use of her legs wanted to start sewing again, and to start up a home-based soft furnishing business.

After discussion, a mechanical device was favoured over an electronic one.  A modified bicycle brake handle was incorporated in a shaped handgrip and attached to the existing foot control via a Bowden cable. An elasticated strap was fitted to the handgrip to allow thumb and forefinger to feed and direct material through the machine.

This solution does not interfere with the electrical components of the machine and it can quickly and easily be reverted to foot control.

The client has completed several orders and has more in the pipeline. She will be investing in a more sophisticated machine for her business which will use the same adaptation.
