The challenge

Our client had suffered a stroke and lost the use of his left arm. In addition, he required a 4 wheeled walker to give him stability when he walked. Unfortunately, walkers cannot be operated with only one hand.

The solution

The client’s walker was modified to have a bar across the top so that he could control the walker from the centre. The brakes were modified so that both brakes operated from a single brake handle which he could reach from the central position. This particular walker folder up from side to side, and the client wanted to be able to collapse the walker himself so that it would fit in his sons car so that they could go out for the day.

The central bar was hinged using a universal joint and retained in position by a knurled nut. The client is now able to release the central bar and fold the walker using only his right hand.
