The challenge

Exercise bikeThis client has spinal muscular atrophy and in order to delay the progression of muscle wasting he has to exercise as much as possible but is very restricted in what he can do.  An exercise bike needed to be adapted to hold his legs in place and have a smaller pedaling cycle than normal.

The bike’s friction bearing was replaced with a standard bicycle bottom. Two cranks were cut down to half their normal length and a special pedal bar attached. Shoes were made of chipboard & thermosetting plastic, large enough to allow his slippers to fit comfortably but with enough side wall to keep his feet in place.

He soon noted that the regular daily exercise was improving his stamina.
